Dear Rachel, I’m writing as your constituent to share a new report by Best for Britain which begs the question: “Is it time to talk about EU membership?”. I think it is. In an increasingly volatile and unstable world, and with the UK suffering from anaemic growth and falling living standards, I believe it is time to begin a conversation about European Union membership. https://www.bestforbritain.org/is_time_eu_membership The damage done to the UK economy since Brexit is stark, latest estimates suggest that we may have lost between 6% to 8% of economic output, equating to almost £90 billion in lost tax revenue each and every year. The UK Government’s relationship reset with the EU has been welcome, but will only deliver modest economic growth. Similarly, a Customs Union or rejoining the Single Market will require a protracted negotiation that will lose support amongst those on the right and fail to inspire significant support on the left or revitalise our stagnant economy. Membership of the EU would provide the most economic growth and is more popular than either joining a Customs Union or the Single Market. Unlike the options of a UK-EU customs union, or joining the EU Single Market, membership of the EU would also give the UK ‘decision making’ (as opposed to ‘decision shaping’) rights over EU regulations, and allow UK representation on the Court of Justice of the European Union. The polling data in this report shows that membership of the European Union is the only sustainable policy option for future UK-EU relations. It is the only option that will deliver change at the pace which it is required. Crucially, it will undermine the advances of Reform UK by providing a clear pathway to economic growth and highlight the damage of the project for which their leader was the key architect. The world has changed beyond recognition over the last decade, but the economic reality has not. Membership of the EU is the only way to return Britain to the centre of the world stage.
