Dear Matthew, As one of your constituents, I am writing to ask if you will attend the Westminster Hall debate on 24th April, led by Andrew Lewin MP, which will focus on the UK’s trading relationship with the EU (https://whatson.parliament.uk/event/cal51413). This crucial debate takes place less than a month before UK and EU leaders meet to discuss the review of the current trade agreement - so I hope you can find the time to listen and contribute to this discussion at such a significant moment for our country’s trading position. Independent analysis by Frontier Economics has modelled the negative impact of US tariffs on our economy. The findings suggest that deep alignment between the UK and EU on goods and services could offset the impact of these tariffs on the UK, and reduce them by a third for the EU. Not only that, but this alignment could grow our economy by 1.5%, with the proceeds of this growth disproportionately benefitting the Midlands and North of England - the industrial heartlands that we all rely on. I know that this is a complex issue, but this debate is not about choosing between the US and the EU or preventing us from pursuing trade deals elsewhere. Rather, it is about prioritising our largest, closest, and most reliable trading partner, the EU. Areas like ours need growth, and no other policy proposal or infrastructure project offers this level of growth over the same timescale.
